Kunsthistorisches Museum Wien

Museumsplatz, Wien, Wien

Description

The Kunsthistorisches Museum, often referred to as Vienna's Fine Arts Museum, is Austria's largest art museum. The building was constructed in the 1870-80's, at the same time as the Natural History Museum across Maria-Theresien-Platz, to house the Habsburgs' collections. Architecturally, it is notable for its Renaissance Revival façade and grand stairway featuring sculptures and paintings. The collections contain a lot of Renaissance and Old Master paintings from artists such as Titian, Raphael, Pieter Brugel the Elder (Tower of Babel), J. Vemeer, Velazquez, Rubens, and Caravaggio.

Access & Transport

The museum is on Maria-Theresien-Platz, just southwest of the Hofburg palace and northeast of the Museum Quarter. Museumsquartier (U2), Volkstheater (U3) and Burgring (1, 2, 71, D) stations are all within a 2mins' walk. There is barrier free access at the side entrance of the building (Burgring 5)

Instructions & Recommendations

There are other art museums nearby but that may feel a little too much in one day so we would suggest enjoying the views from Maria-Theresien-Platz, have lunch and then head to the Museum of Natural History Vienna across the square.

Meta review

The museum is on the shortlist of all travel guides and most travel blogs. It also ranks high on online review portals with visitors highlighting both the high quality of the paintings but also the magnificent interior decoration and architecture: 'the building itself is art'. From a practical aspect, positives include the free admission for children and the large comfortable sofas in the major rooms whilst the negatives don't seem to be numerous with the lack of descriptions in languages other than German probably the main one.

Environmental & Social

No environmental data available - some environment impact to run the museum (mostly electricity) Positive from a social perspective by helping spread culture and the arts.

Conclusion

The Kunsthistorisches Museum is a standout cultural attraction in Vienna, a must see for art lovers, and recommended for others. The building and square on which it is located are also worth a look and the admission fee is affordable for families.
