Description
Maria-Theresien-Platz is a large public square in Vienna framed by the near identical buildings of the Natural History Museum and the Kunsthistorisches Museum (Fine Arts Museum). At the centre is a large monument to Empress Maria Thereisa erected in 1888 with comprises her sculptures as well as representative figures of the administration, the science and art, the military and her advisers. There are also other sculptures spread across the square, in front of the two museum buildings.
Access & Transport
The square is directly to the southwest of the Hofburg palace and northeast of the Museum Quarter. Museumsquartier (U2), Volkstheater (U3 and tram 49), Ring/Volkstheater (1, 2, 71, D) and Burgring (1, 2, 71, D) stations are all within a 2mins' walk.
Instructions & Recommendations
We suggest combining this activity with a visit to the Kunsthistorisches Museum and/or the Museum of Natural History (Naturhistorisches Museum). A Christmas market gets set up in the square in December.
Environmental & Social
Environmentally neutral. Part of the city's architectural heritage
Conclusion
The square is generally visited as a transit to one of the surrounding museums but is worth a look on its own mostly because of the amazing symmetry created by the beautiful nearly identical buildings with their wide Renaissance Revival façades and the focal point of the impressive Maria Theresa monument. Quite dramatic when lit up at night as well.
