Museum of Military History, Vienna

1 Arsenal, Wien, Wien

Description

The Museum of Military History (Heeresgeschichtliches Museum) belongs to the Austrian Armed Forces and documents the history of the country's military affairs. It is housed in a building that is part of the expansive Vienna's Arsenal and contains a magnificent Hall of Fame and memorial for the Imperial Army. Exhibits include various weapons, aircraft, armoured vehicles, medals, photographs and documents arranged over themed halls starting from the 16th century to the post WW2 period. There is also a tank hall and an artillery hall within the complex.

Access & Transport

The Arsenal complex is about 3km southwest of the Opera and Innere Stadt, the city centre of Vienna. 'Hauptbahnhof Ost S' tram station (D) and Vienna Central train station are a 5mins walk away.

Instructions & Recommendations

We recommend combining this activity with a visit of the Belvedere Palaces and gardens.

Meta review

The museum gets excellent online reviews with some visitors ranking it among the best military museums they have seen. The content is interesting and well explained, it is comprehensive, admission is cheap and the building itself is worth a visit. The main issue is the lack of A/C and ventilation on hot weather days.

Environmental & Social

Repurposed building with low energy consumption. Preserves the country's technical and historical heritage + educational

Conclusion

The Museum of Military History in Vienna is a gem for those with an interest in history and everything technical, not just military history buffs. Excellent value and definitely a good option for a change from the palaces and art museums
