Museum of Natural History, Vienna

Bellariastraße, Wien, Wien

Description

The Museum of Natural History of Vienna (Naturhistorisches Museum Wien) houses a comprehensive collection of exhibits displayed across 39 halls and 5 sections: mineralogy & petrography, meteorites, palaeontology, prehistory and anthropology. The building was designed at the end of the 19th century in Renaissance Revival style and is notable for its various paintings, its main staircase and its wide façade, nearly similar to that of the Kunsthistorisches Museum across Maria-Theresien-Platz.

Access & Transport

The museum is on Maria-Theresien-Platz, just southwest of the Hofburg palace and northeast of the Museum Quarter. Museumsquartier (U2), Volkstheater (U3 and tram 49), Ring/Volkstheater (1, 2, 71, D) and Burgring (1, 2, 71, D) stations are all within a 2mins' walk. There is barrier free access at the side entrance of the building (Burgring 7)

Instructions & Recommendations

We would suggest combining this museum with a walk through the Volksgarten, crossing Maria-Theresien-Platz, and a visit of the Kunsthistorisches Museum.

Meta review

The museum gets highly rated by online reviewers and recommended by travel guides. Visitors enjoy the breadth of collections but seem to be mostly surprised by the gorgeous interior - to rival some of the best palaces according to several reviewers. The labelling is mostly in German but the amount of information provided in English is described as sufficient. The only real recurring complaint is the lack of air conditioning and ventilation when the weather is very hot.

Environmental & Social

The building has Austria's Ecolabel, meaning it uses 100% green electricity, waste separation, energy saving bulbs and F&B sourcing is focused on regional and organic food. The museum is targeting CO2 neutrality by 2030 and uses solar panels. Educational.

Conclusion

The Natural History Museum seems to have it all; perhaps not the most impressive you will ever see but it is educational - appropriate for all ages, the building interior and exterior are beautiful, and it is very reasonably priced. Excellent value
