Schönbrunn Palace (Imperial Tour)

47 Schönbrunner Schloßstraße, Wien, Wien

Description

Schönbrunn Palace was the summer residence of the Habsburg rulers, in the outskirts of Vienna. From a hunting reserve for the emperor in the 16th century it was developed over time to include over 1,400 rooms and a large park including gardens, monuments and sculptures. There are several types of tickets to visit various parts of the palace and some tickets that combine a visit of the place and some of the gardens. This review is for the Imperial tour that takes visitors through 22 rooms with an audio-guide, including state rooms and the private apartments of Franz Joseph and Sisi.

Access & Transport

The complex is 5km to the southwest of Vienna's city centre. By car, take Friedrichstraße/B1 and exit onto Schönbrunner Schloßbrücke (when coming from the city). The Schönbrunn underground station (U4) and Schloss Schönbrunn tram station (10, 49, 52, 60) are next to the main entrance on the north side.

Instructions & Recommendations

*** Admission to the palace is provided with fixed times. To avoid long waiting times, you should book a slot online ahead of time *** We suggest combining a visit of the palace with a walk through the park and the Technical Museum a 5 mins walk away across Auer Welsbach Park.

Meta review

Billed as one of the highlights of any visit to Vienna by travel guides and magazines, online review portals also list this activity near the top of the rankings. Visitors enjoy the sumptuous rooms, good explanations from the audio-guide and the gorgeous park. The main drawbacks are that it gets busy in the afternoons and photography is not allowed within the palace.

Environmental & Social

The mix of gardens and running the place make this activity neutral from an environmental perspective, in our opinion. Socially positive as it helps preserve the city and country's cultural and architectural heritages

Conclusion

The Schönbrunn is a sight to behold and even those who do not show much interest for lavishly decorated rooms should enjoy learning more about the Habsburg dynasty history, the lifestyle there, and a walk through the gorgeous park.
