Schönbrunn Palace Park

47 Schönbrunner Schloßstraße, Wien, Wien

Description

Schönbrunn Palace was the summer residence of the Habsburg rulers, in the outskirts of Vienna. The surrounding park includes various gardens, sculptures and monuments such as the Gloriette which now houses a cafe crowning a hill along the garden axis, the Roman Ruin (a nostalgic legacy from the Romantic movement), various sculptures representing deities and virtues, a palm house and an orangerie garden (with pomegranates, olive trees and myrtles).

Access & Transport

The park and palace are 5km to the southwest of Vienna city centre. By car, take Friedrichstraße/B1 and exit onto Schönbrunner Schloßbrücke (when coming from the city). The Schönbrunn underground station (U4) and Schloss Schönbrunn tram station (10, 49, 52, 60) are next to the main entrance on the north side.

Instructions & Recommendations

The following attractions have an admission fee: Privy Garden, Orangery Garden, Maze & Labyrinth, the Gloriette, Desert Experience & Palm House and the Children’s Museum

Meta review

The park gets excellent online reviews, and the only meaningful drawback is that it is not as enjoyable in the late fall and winter. Visitors' favourites include the Gloriette, the Roman Ruin, the Neptune Fountain and the view over the palace from the hill where the Gloriette is located. The park is described as clean and well maintained.

Environmental & Social

No environmental data but this is a green activity. This attraction helps preserve the regional architectural and natural heritage. It also provides high quality green spaces for the local residents

Conclusion

The Schönbrunn Palace Park does, in our opinion, deserve a special trip from the city centre of Vienna, especially when coupled with a visit of the Palace. For those with the time and budget there are plenty of attractions inside so it is quite possible to spend an entire day in the complex.
