Schönbrunn Zoo, Vienna

13B Maxingstraße, Wien, Wien

Description

Schönbrunn Zoo (Tiergarten Schönbrunn) was established in the mid-18th century in the Schönbrunn Palace Park, making it the world's oldest zoo still in operation. It houses around 8,000 animals from 700 species and has a historic Imperial Pavilion at its centre. Animal sections include inter alia, a Polarium (sea lions), a plunge pool for polar bears, orangutans in a rehabilitated palm house, an insectarium, a big cat house, a rat house, a Giraffe Park and the East Africa House.

Access & Transport

The zoo is on the westen side of Schönbrunn Palace Park, 5km to the southwest of Vienna city centre. By car, take Friedrichstraße/B1 and exit onto Kennedybrücke (when coming from the city). The Hietzig underground station (U4) and Dommayergasse tram station (10, 49, 52, 60) are a 10-15mins walk away. Buses 56A, 56B, 58A also stop nearby.

Instructions & Recommendations

Note that children under 14 must be accompanied by an adult.

Meta review

The zoo has been voted the best in Europe several times by reference zoo expert Anthony Sheridan. Online reviews are however not as enthusiastic as one might expect with most visitors rating it as very good or even excellent but not on par with some of the best in the world. The thumbs up go to the good maintenance and blending of historical structure, the diversity of animals, the easy-to-follow route to cover the entire zoo, and the various kids playgrounds and coffee stop options.

Environmental & Social

The zoo provides funding for species protection projects (Giant Panda, Bald ibis, Batagur, Orangutan, Polar Bar, etc.) participates in captive-breeding programs. More info here: https://www.zoovienna.at/en/natur-und-artenschutz/species-protection-wild/

Conclusion

Schönbrunn Zoo is an excellent zoo and makes for a good variation in a city rich in cultural attractions, provided you are comfortable with the concept of animals being held in captivity.
