Spanish Riding School, Vienna (training)

1 Michaelerplatz, Wien, Wien

Description

The Spanish Riding School is a classical dressage school of Lipizzaner horses (the breed of choice of the Habsburg dynasty) based in Vienna. It is the oldest of its kind in the world and considered one of the leading four worldwide. It conducts formal performances for spectators and also opens for training sessions several days a week in the baroque Winter Riding School building. The training includes both experienced and young stallions and consists of various exercises accompanied by classical music.

Access & Transport

The school is in the city centre of Vienna, close to the Hofburg and the Volkgarten. Buses 1A and 2A stop on Michaelerplatz, Herrengasse underground station (U3) is 200m away and Burgring tram station (1, 2 ,71, D) is about 5mins walk, just behind the Hofburg palace.

Instructions & Recommendations

Children under the age of 3 years are not allowed to visit and for the performances. Those aged 3 to 6 may sit on the lap of adults. Wheelchair users are kindly requested to register in advance at office@srs.at/ Admission is 15 minutes before the starting time

Meta review

Reviews for the training session are quite mixed. Not that the website promises anything exciting but there are recurring comments that one should keep expectations in check: no jumps or fancy drills but rather a lot of walking and trotting with a few dressage steps thrown in for those who know a little bit about this art. Some do enjoy it, others find it a little dull and many comment about the viewing not being very comfortable, especially on the balcony.

Environmental & Social

We deem this activity environmentally neutral and, although the horses are bridled, they are well cared for.

Conclusion

If you can afford the hefty price, go for the formal performance of the Spanish Riding School but if you can't, or the dates don't match and you have some interest in horse dressage, then we would recommend attending a training session. If you have limited interest, you run the risk of being disappointed, so best to do some research beforehand.
