Technical Museum Vienna

212 Mariahilfer Straße, Wien, Wien

Description

The Vienna Museum of Technology houses technological models from the railway, shipbuilding, aviation and industrial sectors with a focus on Austria contributions in those technological developments. The building is notable for the historicism design of its façade and the bright exhibition halls with glass domes. Sections include, inter alia: heavy industry, energy, mass production, everyday life, musical instruments, transport, and research.

Access & Transport

The museum is 5km to the southwest of Vienna's city centre. By car, take Friedrichstraße/B1 and exit onto Schloßallee. The Penzinger Straße tram station (46, 52, 60) is 200m away, the Schönbrunn underground station (U4) 700m and the Westbahnhof train station is 2km away.

Instructions & Recommendations

We suggest combining this attraction with a visit of the Schönbrunn Palace and Park, a 5 mins walk away across Auer Welsbach Park.

Meta review

The museum often takes a backseat in travel guides and seldom features in travel blogs and magazines, but online reviews are consistently good, putting forward its suitability for both adults and children. 'Interesting' and 'spacious' are recurring adjectives with planes and trains clear crowd favourites. The only issue is that it can get noisy with children on weekend and there is a lot of echo inside.

Environmental & Social

The museum's motto is "Reduce, reuse, recycle". The building has Austria's Ecolabel, meaning it uses 100% green electricity, waste separation, energy saving bulbs and F&B sourcing is focused on regional and organic food + it has photovoltaic systems. Educational aspects as well.

Conclusion

The Technical Museum is one of Vienna's top-tier venues in terms of educational content and its exhibits will please and interest children and adults alike. It is also close to the Schönbrunn Palace, a star attraction, so tourists may consider combining those.
