Upper Belvedere Palace, Vienna

27 Prinz Eugen-Straße, Wien, Wien

Description

The Upper Belvedere is a Baroque Palace, part of a complex built as a summer residence for Prince Eugene of Savoy. Other sections include the Lower Belvedere Palace, the Orangery, and the Palace Stables, all set within a large, landscaped park in the southeast of Vienna. It was built in the early 18th century and is remarkable for its façade and ceiling frescoes by Italian artists such as Carlo Carlone, Francisco Solimena and Gaetano Fanti. The palace houses an art museum with works by artists such as Klimt, Schiele, Funke, Monet and van Gogh.

Access & Transport

The Belvedere complex is about 2km southwest of the Opera and Innere Stadt, the city centre of Vienna. Schloss Belvedere tram D line runs past the western edge of the park and Kölblgasse tram station (1, O) is on the eastern edge. The Wien Rennweg train station is a 10mins walk away to the northeast.

Instructions & Recommendations

You may want to combine this palace & museum with the Lower Belvedere, the Museum of Military History and/or Karlskirche (St Charles' Church)

Meta review

The palace museum is considered one of the highlights of the city by travel guides and this is confirmed by online review portals. Visitors enjoy the triple combination of a park with sculptures, a beautifully decorated palace and the museums with some artwork by famous artists such as Klimt - the 'Kiss' painting is a highlight for many. The only recurring negative comments relate to the admission fee in relation with the size of the museum, and the food quality.

Environmental & Social

The complex has Austria's Ecolabel, meaning it uses 100% green electricity, waste separation, energy saving bulbs and F&B sourcing is focused on regional and organic food. Preserves the city and country's architectural and artistic heritages.

Conclusion

The Upper Belvedere Palace is a must see for art and architecture lovers travelling to Vienna and the surrounding landscaped gardens make it all the more attractive. Highly recommended.
