Description
The Vienna State Opera is the home of the Vienna State Ballet and members of Vienna Philarmonic are recruited from the institution. The building was constructed in the 1860's in Renaissance Revival style and is known for its grand marble staircase. Tours of the building are available in German and English. They last approximately 40 mins and take visitors from the foyer up the grand staircase and through the state rooms (Tea Salon, Marble Hall, Schwind foyer, Gustav Mahler Hall) before heading to the auditorium.
Access & Transport
The address is Opernring 2, on the southern side of Innere Stadt, between the Hofburg and Karslplatz. The tram stop 'Oper, Karlsplatz U' (1, 2, 62 71, D) is at the street corner alongside the stop for bus 2A. The Karsplatz metro station (U1, U4) is a 2 mins' walk south.
Instructions & Recommendations
*** You will need to check the actual schedule for the month of your visit as the timing is not consistent. Tours mostly occur in the afternoon but not every day *** Link to schedule: https://www.wiener-staatsoper.at/en/staatsoper/guided-tours/
Environmental & Social
No data available We deem this activity environmentally neutral and marginally positive from a social perspective as it helps preserve the city's architectural and cultural heritage.
Conclusion
The guided tour is an excellent opportunity to visit a famous opera house for those who have never attended a performance. Not a substitute, but if your interest also lies in architecture and technical aspects then this is definitely an option to consider.
