Description
St. Stephen's Cathedral (Stephansdom) is a Romanesque and Gothic church built in the 14th century in the center of Vienna (the first structure on this site dates from the 12th century). Architecturally, it stands out for its south tower with a spire reaching 136m, its Romanesque façade framed by two towers and its multicolour tiled roof. Inside, the highlights include the chiselled pillars, the main altarpiece and the tomb of Emperor Frederick III. The standard cathedral ticket includes an audio-guide.
Access & Transport
The cathedral is at the centre of Vienna's historical district, along Kärntner Straße and immediately north of Stephansplatz where an underground station (U1, U3) is located. Buses 1A, 2A and 3A stop there as well.
Instructions & Recommendations
There are also tickets available at the same price for the Catacombs tour, the North Tower (Pummerin) and the South Tower (0.50 euro less) as well as a combined ticket for the Cathedral + Catacombs + Towers + Treasury of the Teutonic Order.
Environmental & Social
The ongoing environmental footprint is low, and the attraction is part of the city's artistic and architectural heritages
Conclusion
St Stephen's Cathedral is one of Vienna's architectural gems and a defining feature of its skyline. The interior might be slightly underwhelming for religious art lovers, but the massive structure and distinctive design are worth a special trip.
