Artium Museum, Vitoria

24 Francia Kalea, Gasteiz, Euskadi

Description

Artium is a contemporary art museum located in Vitoria-Gasteiz, the capital of the province of Álava, in the Spanish Basque Country. The building was designed by architect José Luis Catón and the collections are arranged around 5 time periods, starting with the Avant-garde artists (1900-1939). There are artworks from Basque and Spanish artists exposed (or installed) permanently as well as temporary exhibitions.

Access & Transport

The museum is in the centre of the city, a 5mins walk from the main squares and monuments, and 1km north of the train station (15mins walk). There is an underground parking next to the complex. Vitoria itself is 60km south of Bilbao, 100km west of Pamplona, and 120km northeast of Burgos. There are direct trains to Pamplona (65mins) and Burgos (85mins)

Instructions & Recommendations

We suggest combining this activity with the Plaza Virgen Blanca and the Cathedral of Santa Maria for a comprehensive exploration of the historical center.

Meta review

A museum that is generally listed in travel guides but seldom featured elsewhere. The online reviews are quite inconsistent but overall the experience seems to be an average one with few big names on display and a weak permanent collection sometimes positively complemented by an interesting temporary exhibition. Recurring positive comments about the building itself and the indoor spaces that are much larger than expected given most of the exhibition spaces are in an underground floor.

Environmental & Social

Purposely built complex with carbon footprint mainly from electricity (cooling and lighting). Helps spread the arts

Conclusion

Artium has been given the right infrastructure to succeed but lacks content that can appeal to visitors without a strong interest in contemporary art. Worth trying if in town but keep your expectations low and hope to be surprised on the upside

Key positive

Well suited exhibition spaces

Central location and low admission fees

Key negative

Permanent collection lacks anchor works from famous artists

Suitability

Accessible for wheelchair users (ramp and lift). Children under 14 may not find the content very interesting
