Warsaw Zoological Garden

1/3 Ratuszowa, Warszawa, Mazowieckie

Description

The Warsaw Zoological Garden (Miejski Ogród Zoologiczny w Warszawie), aka Warsaw Zoo, is home to over 12,000 animals from more than 500 species spread over 40ha. Some of the most popular species include the Sumatran Tiger, penguins, giraffes, African bush elephants, Hippopotamus, and sharks in the aquarium section. As a historical aside, the zoo is famous for having been used as a hiding place for Jews and escapees from the Warsaw Ghetto during WW2.

Access & Transport

The zoo is located on the right bank of the Vistula river, across the Gdański Bridge or the Śląsko-Dąbrowski Bridge from the city centre. It is served by the Warszawa Zoo train station as well as the tram.

Meta review

As usual, online review portals for this type of attraction are flooded with fake entries (both positive and negative) but, navigating those, the zoo can generally be described as good but not exceptional. It is well laid out, animals look decently taken care of though the enclosures don't seem particularly large, and the admission price is very reasonable.

Environmental & Social

We consider this attraction environmentally neutral. The zoo runs the Birds' Asylum and CITES Centre to rescue injured animals; this partially offsets the issue of captivity. Link: https://zoo.waw.pl/en/role-of-zoological-gardens

Conclusion

The Warsaw Zoo is a worthwhile attraction, in particular for families with younger children, provided you are comfortable with the concept of animals in captivity. It isn't particularly impressive by international standards so we would rather recommend it for local and regional residents.
