Description
The Jefferson Memorial was built in 1939-43 in Washington D.C. to commemorate the Founding Fathers of the United States and Thomas Jefferson, the principal author of the U.S. Declaration of Independence. It was designed by John Russell Pope with a circular colonnade in Ionic style, 50m in diameter and open to the elements. The 5.8m bronze statue inside was sculpted by Rudulph Evans and added in 1947. On the panel of the southwest interior wall are excerpts from the Declaration of Independence, written in 1776 and on the northwest interior wall is an excerpt from the 1777 Virginia Statute for Religious Freedom.
Access & Transport
The memorial is just over 1km south of the Washington National Monument next to the Arlington Memorial Bridge and the Potomac River. The NMS bus service stops there. For those that require it, an elevator is located in the basement of the Thomas Jefferson Memorial to access the chamber area.
