Description
The Lincoln Memorial was built in 1914-22 to honour the 16th president of the United States, Abraham Lincoln, at the western end of the National Mall in Washington DC. It was designed as a Greek Doric temple by Henri Bacon with the interior statue of the president designed by D.C. French and sculpted by the Piccirilli brothers. There are inscriptions of two well-known speeches by Lincoln (the Gettysburg Address and his second inaugural address) and the memorial has been the site of many famous speeches, including Martin Luther King Jr.'s "I Have a Dream".
Access & Transport
The memorial is next to the Arlington Memorial Bridge and the Potomac River. The NMS bus service stops there. There are 58 steps from the chamber to the plaza level and 87 steps to the reflecting pool. For visitor with reduced mobility, there is an elevator located in the lower lobby in the southeast corner of the building.
Instructions & Recommendations
The memorial is worth seeing by day or by night when it is lit. It is a 1.5km walk across the bridge to the Arlington National Cemetery.
Environmental & Social
Low carbon footprint and part of the city and nation's historical and architectural heritages.
