United States Holocaust Memorial Museum

100 Raoul Wallenberg Place Southwest, Washington, District of Columbia

Description

The United States Holocaust Memorial Museum provides for the documentation, study, and interpretation of the Shoah: the genocide of European Jews during World War II. It is dedicated to helping people of all nationalities confront hatred, prevent genocide, promote human dignity, and strengthen democracy. The museum consists of the Hall of Remembrance, 2 permanent exhibitions and rotating exhibits. The collections contain a wide range of media: art, books, pamphlets, advertisements, maps, film, and video historical footage, etc.

Access & Transport

The Museum is located on the National Mall, just southeast of the Washington Monument between 14th Street and Raoul Wallenberg Place (15th Street).

Instructions & Recommendations

*** At the time of this review, free timed-entry tickets are required to enter the Museum building. $1 transaction fee applies *** We suggest combining a visit there with the Jefferson Memorial, about 10 mins walk away.

Meta review

The museum is rated very highly on online review portals with visitors highlighting the educational aspect as well as the intensity of the experience - sometimes heart-breaking (so think about age appropriateness if you have young children). Be ready for a lot of reading and make sure to have a ticket before you go as many reviewers were not able to get in as walk-in.

Environmental & Social

No environmental data available, we deem this marginally negative (building construction and electricity). Socially positive and important as a memorial, historical and educational site.

Conclusion

An excellent and necessary memorial & museum but optional for travellers who would already have been to one or several on the topic of the Shoah - even though regular reminders of genocides are a good thing despite the psychological and emotional intensity of the experience.
