Ancient City of Troy - by Evgenii Zakharov on Google
Description
Troy was an ancient city known as the setting for the Greek myth of the Trojan War which features prominently in the Iliad. It is located 30km southwest of Çanakkale in present-day Turkey. Until the late 19th century, most scholars assumed that the city and the war were legendary, but excavations starting in the 1870's unearthed (literally) the site of the city as well as earlier settlements: there are nine major layers dating from the Early Bronze Age (300BC) to the Byzantine era (up to the 13th century). There is also a reproduction of the famed Trojan Horse at the site.
Access & Transport
The site is 2 km off the Çanakkale-Izmir highway (D550/E87) and 30km from the city of Çanakkale with mini-buses plying the route. The city itself is 300km / 4h drive from Istanbul
Instructions & Recommendations
We suggest visiting the Troia Museum near the entrance before the ruins. Taking a guide is also helpful in getting much more insights in the history of the place and what you are seeing
Environmental & Social
Environmentally neutral. Helps preserve the architectural and historical heritage of the region
Conclusion
A visit there is a great opportunity to learn about the real Troy, rather than the myth, but do not expect to be bowled over. Recommended only as part of a road trip in the southern Marmara area and make sure you include the museum in your schedule.
Key positive
The Troia Museum next door and the replica of the Trojan Horse
Key negative
Archaeological site is not very large and impressive
Suitability
The boardwalk has some short flights of stairs so it isn't fully accessible to wheelchair users who do not have any assistance.
