Description
Bozcaada Castle was built in the mid-15th century following the conquest of Bozcaada/Tenedos island by Mehmet II. A castle had previously stood there but was demolished during the War of Chiogga (between Venice and Genoa around 1380). It is notable for its well-preserved bailey and long and wide moat. Inside the citadel there is an arsenal, cisterns, infirmary, and a mosque.
Access & Transport
The castle is in the main town of Bozcaada, where the ferry arrives. Ferries operate every hour from Geyikli, Fri-Sun during the peak season and every 2h from Mondy to Thursday. Only 2-way tickets are sold. Geyikli is 50km southwest of Canakkale and in season there are direct buses from Istanbul, 350km/5h away.
Instructions & Recommendations
The rest of the island is worth visiting and even staying overnight If you are planning on bringing your car onto the island during the summer season, make sure to book a ticket ahead of time as spaces are limited.
Environmental & Social
We deem this activity environmentally neutral. Helps preserve the island's architectural and historical heritage
Conclusion
The castle is without a doubt one of the highlights of Bozcaada Island and any visitor there should spare one hour to explore it. However, we would not recommend tourists to come all the way to the island just for the castle - rather, consider it as a bonus if you already have plans to come to Bozcaada.
