Description
The Complex of Sultan Bayezid II Health Museum is dedicated to the history and development of medicine, in particular during the Ottoman period. It is located in the Sultan Bayezid II Complex, a külliye designed by architect Hayrettin at the end of the 15th century in the city of Edirne in Thrace; it is now part of Trakya University. The madrasa of the complex was one of the most important medical schools of its time and trained physicians in Turkish-Islamic medicine in the hospital until it ceased operations in 1909.
Access & Transport
The museum is located 1.5km northwest of the center of Edirne, along Miman Sinan Cd. To Istanbul it is a 3h / 250km drive, or a 4h bus or train ride (low frequency) to/from Edirne
Instructions & Recommendations
This activity can easily be combined with a visit of the Selimiye Mosque, also located in the city of Edirne
Environmental & Social
No or limited carbon footprint and repurposing of an existing building. Helps preserve both the country's culture and the city's architecture
Conclusion
If you happen to be in the Edirne province or planning a Western Marmara itinerary and are of a naturally curious nature, then you should definitely visit the Complex of Bayezid II Health Museum. You will get to learn about Ottoman medicine and physician training within the wall of a traditional mosque complex - a little random maybe but worth your time, especially when combined with the Selimiye Mosque of Edirne, just 2km away.
