Description
The Gallipoli Peninsula Historical Park consists of several memorials and cemeteries in relation with the battles that took place and the 500,000 soldiers that lost their lives there during WW1. The Gallipoli Campaign (Feb 1915 to Jan 1916) have left a deep mark in Turkish, Australian and New Zealand history (ANZAC day commemorates this) and cultures; the remembered soldiers belong to those countries as well as France and England. There are 31 cemeteries and 6 commemorative monuments spread over a 330km2 area. Some of the most famous sights (besides the graveyards) include ANZAC cove and the 42m high Canakkale Martyrs Monument in Morto Bay.
Access & Transport
The peninsula is on the north-western shore of the Dardanelles Straits (accessible by a bridge for those arriving from the other side). It is 280km from Istanbul on the northern shores of the Sea of Marmara and 400km through the southern side.
Instructions & Recommendations
It is best to have a car to explore the area although there are some (long) day tours organized from Istanbul.
Environmental & Social
Environmentally neutral. It helps preserve the region's historical heritage and bring a little economic activity to this rural area
Conclusion
The WW1 Gallipoli campaign left such a deep imprint on the lives of millions of people that it should be one of the very first places to visit outside of Istanbul (without having to take a plane). For those not very familiar with the events, it is an excellent opportunity to get acquainted with that moment and place in history.
