Description
The Domain of Dampierre-en-Yvelines consists of a castle, a parc, gardens and a museum of carriages. It is in the Chevreuse valley, in the Yvelines department, to the southwest of Paris. The château was built in the late 17th century in classical style with some significant restoration during the 19th century and stayed in the Albert de Luynes family until 2018. It is surrounded by a large parc designed by Le Nôtre and structured around an axial perspective that includes a Grand Canal and a grass amphitheatre. A floral parc was added to it behind the Island Pavilion in the 20th century. Finally, the museum exhibits carriages that belonged to the Luynes family and from the owner's private collection. The price indicated in this review is for the standard domain access but there is a list of private, more extensive tours, available.
Access & Transport
By car, from western / central Paris, take the N118 until Saclay followed by the D306/D906 until Chevreuse village where you should keep straight on the D58. We highly recommend having a map or GPS app! The closest RER train station is Saint-Rémy-lès-Chevreuse, at the end of the RER B line (B4), which can easily be reached in about 45' from downtown Paris. You can also take the RER D until Verrière and then hop on to the Baladobus (which used to leave from Saint-Rémy-lès-Chevreuse at the end of the line RERB (B4). Instructions & Recommendations
A good full day itinerary would include a visit of the village of Chevreuse + Chateau de la Madeleine followed by a hike, then lunch at the Domaine de Dampierre (they have a restaurant as well) followed by the visit of the estate before heading on to the Vaux de Cernay Abbey.
Environmental & Social
No environmental data. The chateau would be using some electricity (heating and lighting) but the rest falls under the green activity category. Socially, this attraction helps preserve the region's architectural heritage.
Conclusion
A relatively unknown estate with great potential once renovation of the chateau will be completed - scheduled for 2025. Currently, only the parc / gardens and museum can be visited, which makes pricing a little expensive.
Key positive
Beautiful estate and not crowded
Key negative
The chateau is currently undergoing renovations
Need a car to get there
Suitability
Accessible for visitors with reduced mobility but exploring the entire park would require the help of an accompanying adult or use of golf cart / carriage ride
