Catedral de Zamora

1 Plaza la Catedral, Zamora, Castilla y León

Description

The Cathedral of Zamora was built in Romanesque style in the 12th century, on the right bank of the Duero River. It is still framed by the castle and medieval defensive walls. Architecturally and artistically, the church features a dome-tower with 16 side narrow windows, a sculpted south portal, carved choir stalls, several tombs, and a museum housed in the 17th-century cloister that displays a collection of Flemish tapestries.

Access & Transport

The cathedral and the castle are in the western part of the old centre of town, a 10mins walk from the Plaza Mayor. You may need to park a little further as this part of town seems to be mostly pedestrian-only The town of Zamora is 65km north of Salamanca (A-66) and 100km west of Valladolid (A-11)

Instructions & Recommendations

Visit of the cathedral includes admission to the museum and is not allowed during religious services. We suggest combining this monument with the castle next to it

Meta review

Not often listed by travel bloggers, the cathedral gets described as relatively ordinary in online portals; interesting but not really worth a detour with the exception of the collection of tapestries, which could however do with better curation (more space so they are not as tightly displayed).

Environmental & Social

No carbon footprint. Part of the town's artistic and architectural heritages

Conclusion

The interior of Zamora Cathedral isn't special, by Spanish cathedral standards at least, but its interesting dome and collection of Flemish tapestries warrant a visit for those who happen to be in town and keen on cultural attractions.

Nothing really grand or impressive
