Description
Sanabria Lake Natural Park is located in the mountainous area of Sierra Segundera and Sierra de la Cabrera, close to north-eastern Portugal. The reserve is centred around Sanabria Lake (318ha), the largest glacial lake on the Iberian Peninsula, with an altitude comprised between 1000m and 2124m (peak of Peña Trevinca). There is great biodiversity extending to both fauna (such as wolf, roe deer, otter, golden eagle) and flora (e.g. birch, oak, willow, ash, scrubland).
Access & Transport
The Park Interpretation Centre is located in the monastery of San Martín de Castañeda, close to the northern shore of the lake and a 25mins (18km) drive to Puebla de Sanabria. The town of Zamora is 130km away and the closest city is Leon, 165km away (2h drive) with Salamanca and Valladolid about 190-200km away.
Instructions & Recommendations
We suggest combining an exploration of this natural reserve with a visit to the village of Puebla de Sanabria.
Environmental & Social
Green attraction. Tourism has some positive impact on the local economic activity
Conclusion
An attractive mountainous area in eastern Castilla-y-Leon that should be on the menu for road-trippers and outdoor enthusiasts exploring the region in-depth. Probably too long of a drive from the main cities otherwise.
Key positive
Beautiful scenery
Mix of hiking and water activities
Key negative
Takes time to get to
Suitability
No restrictions but visitors with reduced mobility will not be able to enjoy the lake(s) and hike opportunities
