Catedral de Zaragoza complex

4 Plaza de la Seo, Zaragoza, Aragón

Description

La Seo, or Cathedral of the Savior, is a Roman catholic church in Zaragoza, Spain. It was built in the early 12th century by repurposing a mosque erected on the site probably in the 7th or 8th century. Aragonese kings were traditionally crowned here until the 15th century. It shares co-cathedral status with the Basílica de Nuestra Señora del Pilar. Parts of the Romanesque building were preserved during redevelopments in Gothic-Mudéjar style in the 14th & 15h centuries whilst the dome was replaced and the main altarpiece added in the early 15th century. Highlights include the bell tower, the church's facade, the wood gilded roof of the Parish of San Miguel, the choir stalls and the various altarpieces and chapels. The cathedral's museum is called the Tapestry Museum and comprises 60 religiously themed decorative artworks dating from the 15th to 18th centuries.

Access & Transport

The cathedral is situated on Plaza de la Seo, in the historical district of Zaragoza, close to the Ebro river, across Calle de Don Jaime I from La Lonja. There are bus services along that street and the 'Plaza España' tram station is a 5mins' walk away.

Instructions & Recommendations

The price shown in the Practical Information section includes visits to the Museum of Tapestries, the Rosario de Cristal and access to the elevator in the Torre del Pilar (part of the Basílica de Nuestra Señora del Pilar).

Meta review

Online reviewers comment that although La Seo may not be as striking as the Basilica del Pilar on the outside, the blending of various architectural styles and the wealth of decoration (including the collection of tapestries in the namesake museum) make it a more interesting visit. The entrance price is generally deemed to be worth it but there are recurring comments that, in the absolute, it is still too high considering the religious nature of the edifice.

Environmental & Social

The ongoing environmental footprint is low, and the ticket fees help maintain the monument which is part of the city's cultural and architectural heritages

Conclusion

La Seo and its museum rank among the most interesting cultural activities in Zaragoza, it offers a combination of interesting architecture and a fair number of artworks. If religious art and architecture are not your thing, then might be best to prioritize the other cathedral (Basílica de Nuestra Señora del Pilar), which is free and more alluring from the outside.

Key positive

Many impressive artworks, including tapestries

Key negative

Entrance is slightly expensive for a religious complex
