Goya Museum (Zaragoza)

23 Calle de Espoz y Mina, Zaragoza, Aragón

Description

The Goya museum (full name: Museo Goya - Colección Ibercaja - Museo Camón Aznar) is a fine arts museum housed in the 16th century Renaissance palace of the Pardo in the historical center of Zaragoza, Spain. The collection comprises paintings, prints, drawings, sculptures and ceramic pieces from various artists including many of Francisco Goya (late 17th / early 18th century).

Access & Transport

Address: #23 calle Espoz y Mina in Zaragoza. It is located less than 100 metres from Plaza del Pilar, between calle Alfonso I and calle Don Jaime I. There are bus services on calle Don Jaime I and the Plaza España tram stop is a 5mins walk away.

Instructions & Recommendations

Photos are not allowed in the museum. We suggest combining this activity with a visit of one or several of the following activities/sights: La Seo Cathedral, the Basílica de Nuestra Señora del Pilar, the Plaza del Pilar, La Lonja, and the Caesaraugusta Theatre Museum.

Meta review

The museum is well rated overall by online reviewers but many comments start with a warning not to expect a wide range of Goya paintings with 2 floors dedicated to works from other artists (from periods before and after him) - the best place to see paintings from the master is probably in El Prado (Madrid). The highlights, according to many visitors, are the building architecture and the section with Goya's engravings: there is a lot of them, and they cover issues outside of religion and portraits (the mainstay of paintings of the time). So, considering the moderate entrance fee, the museum is still very much worth visiting.

Environmental & Social

We could find no information around environmental sustainability Positive from a social perspective by helping spread the arts and preserve the city's architectural heritage.

Conclusion

The museum is an enjoyable fine arts venue, but the name is somewhat misleading: plenty of works by Goya but none of his most famous paintings - and many other artists from different periods are also exhibited.

Key positive

Great engravings and lithographic prints collection

Enjoyable building interior architecture

Key negative

No painting masterpiece from Goya

Suitability

Accessible to visitors with reduced mobility. Children under 14 years old may not be very interested.
