Fluvial Aquarium of Zaragoza - by Management
Description
The Zaragoza Aquarium is the largest freshwater aquarium in Europe, exhibiting 350 species of river fauna from 5 large watersheds: the Amazon, the Mekong, the Nile, the Ebro, and Murray Darling (Australia). The 70 fish tanks house more than 5,000 animals with the central one being 9m deep and over 45m long. The aquarium is located in one of the thematic pavilions built for Expo 2008 (an international exposition held during the summer 2008 with the theme of "Water and Sustainable Development").
Access & Transport
The Expo 2008 area is located about 3km to the northwest of Zaragoza historical center, across the Ebre river. The Clara Campoamor tram stop is within walking distance (1km) and bus 23 stops on Av. de José Atarés.
Instructions & Recommendations
Taking advantage of being out of the city centre, we suggest combining this activity with the Aljafería Palace, 2km away across the river (25mins walk or 5-10mins drive) or with the waterside park Luis Buñuel, a few hundred meters west of the aquarium.
Environmental & Social
Involved in conservation efforts (https://www.acuariodezaragoza.com/conservacion) and presumably some of the water is taken from the Ebre river next door so environmental impact is limited (mostly electricity). Educational aspect as well.
Conclusion
Zaragoza's Aquarium is an excellent activity for families or an alternative when the weather is not cooperative. It has some impressive tanks and specimen but is overpriced, in our opinion.
