Description
The Botanical Gardens of the University of Zurich houses around 7,000 plant species over 5.6ha recreating various habitats, including Alpine and Mediterranean, in the three large greenhouses domes and around the pond. There are also three small fish tanks.
Access & Transport
The garden is located at the interesection of Zollikerstrasse and Hammerstrasse in the Weinegg quarter of the city. Buses 33 and 77 stop there and Hegibachplatz station (tram 11, and trains S18/SN18) is only 300m away.
Instructions & Recommendations
Note that there is also another garden belonging to the University of Zurich now called the 'Old Botanical Garden' situated in the city centre, a 2mins walk west of Bahnhofstrasse.
Environmental & Social
A green attraction. Improves residents' living environment
Conclusion
Nice botanical garden that stands out for its domed greenhouses but we feel this is an attraction that will be best enjoyed for residents looking for a weekend activity or botany buffs rather than the casual tourist with only a couple of days in Zurich. Indeed, nature and the mountains are at the city's doorstep
Key positive
Impressive all-season greenhouses
Close to the city centre and free admission
Key negative
Not very large and nothing truly exceptional
Suitability
The paths and greenhouses look to be accessible for wheelchair users
