Description
The Fraumünster is one of the main churches in Zurich. It was built on the remains of a convent founded in the 9th century and is best known for the stained-glass windows designed by Marc Chagall and Augusto Giacometti, and its large pipe organ. The former cloister has several frescoes and the Crypt Museum exhibits some of the archaeological remains of the previous buildings and the history of the Reformation in the city.
Access & Transport
The church is in Zurich's old town, close to both the Grossmünster and St Peter's churches, a 10mins walk south of the main train station and 2mins from the Helmaus (4, 11) and Paradeplatz (2, 6, 7, 8, 9, 11, 13) tram stops.
Instructions & Recommendations
Religious service is held on Sundays at 10h00. We suggest combining this sight with an exploration of the Lindenhof or Niederdorf neighbourhoods, or a walk / shopping on nearby Bahnhofstrasse.
Environmental & Social
Environmentally neutral. Historic building that is part of the city's architectural and artistic heritages.
Conclusion
A distinctive profile but not a key attraction of the city. The church is more place of worship than tourist attraction although the crypt museum, frescoes and stained-glass windows are all worth a quick look for those in the area.
Key positive
Colourful and modern stained-glass windows
Impressive pipe organ
Key negative
The church is quite bare, outside and within
